STAR Level I (Success Takes a Reader) is a skills-based volunteer program. We connect business professionals and community stakeholders to Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students who need extra support in reading. STAR Level I is a sight word and reading connected text intervention program for selected students in grades 1 and 2. Volunteers review site word drills and fast phrases with students who need help building foundational reading capacity. Volunteers will read connected text with the student, provide mentorship to the striving reads, and serve at least 30 minutes per week with 1-5 students.
STAR Level II (Success Takes a Reader) program is a skills-based volunteer program. This program is a high quality, comprehensive, research-based English literacy tutoring program that supports students, families, and the community. These volunteers are trained in the Volunteer Tutor Certificate program with Williamsburg Technical College. We can connect business professionals and community stakeholders to Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students who need extra support in reading. These volunteers typically serve 30 min – 1 hour per week.
- AmeriCorps State program is considered a part of STAR Level II. The individuals that serve as AmeriCorps members are also trained in the Volunteer Tutor Certificate program with Williamsburg Technical College. These volunteers receive a stipend and serve 3-4 days per week. They are required to track student dosage hours and analyze student reading data. AmeriCorps members are have monthly training and meetings to assist with professional development and ensuring that service sites and students needs are met.
Summer S.A.I.L. (Science and Inquiry Learning) is a 4-week summer enrichment program that aims to prevent the “summer slide” and increase literacy rates in Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties. This program uses certified teachers and provides a 1:1:10 ration with teachers, teacher assistants, and students.
Triple P Georgetown is a county wide initiative focused on helping parents be the best parents they can be by supporting all families. This initiative is a partnership with Tidelands Health, Children’s Recovery Center and Black River United Way. Black River United Way is a Level II Manager. As Level II Mangers, Black River United Way is responsible for coaching seminar practitioners and implementing cross sector team meetings to ensure that barriers are being addressed and ensure high parent engagement. United to Read is an Annual Event and a tri-county partnership with Georgetown, Horry, & Williamsburg County. Volunteers are recruited to read to K-2 grade classroom at the same time and with the same book. This event is held every November.
3rd Grade Reading Pep Rally is an event for Williamsburg County School District 3rd graders. This event gets the students excited about taking their first state test.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income. Children in Georgetown County are eligible for books. Black River United Way administers this program for Georgetown County.
Early Grade Action Council is made up of a group of community stakeholders and agencies to troubleshoot barriers and move the needle on early grade reading success in Georgetown and Williamsburg County.
